FLOODED YOSEMITE CAMPGROUNDS - UPPER & LOWER RIVER CAMPGROUNDS
Riverside, CA. Photographer JeffreyEdward Photography. I seem to be having a recurring conversation with a variety of people regarding Yosemite and specifically the campgrounds that were closed following the flood of 1997.
During the flood the Upper River and Lower River campgrounds were damaged. Since 1997 there has been an ongoing debate about what should become of them, they sit on the flood basin of the Merced River, a nationally protected waterway.
I thought that many of you would like to see all of the wonderfull things that the National Park Service and the environmental lobby have managed to accomplish in the ten years since the flood. Yes it's already been a decade.
I'll be writing more in depth on this subject in the coming weeks. In the meantime enjoy the pictures and remember that the damage that you see is not the flood damage at all. Seems that the folks with Yosemites best interest at heart have decided to use the campgrounds as a combination trash heap and construction storage facility. We wouldn't want to have happy campers camping in such an environmentally sensitive sport now would we? Upper & Lower River Campground pictures.

LEFT BEHIND
Riverside, CA. Photographer JeffreyEdward Photography. A quick set here. A few shots from the Orange Empire Railroad Museum in Perris CA and some from March Air Force Base or what used to be March Air Force Base. It's now officially called March Air Reserve Base, not sure what the difference is. This set shows what happens when things are left behind and decay over time. Left Behind.

ONE HOUR PHOTO
Riverside, CA. Photographer JeffreyEdward Photography. So what can you shoot in one hour? I found myself with an hour to burn before an appointment and decided to head across the street and see if I could find anything interesting. The lighting was poor to say the least. Rain clouds overhead took away almost all of the contrast. Every now and then the Sun would peek out. One Hour Photo.

70 IN 10
Riverside, CA. Photographer JeffreyEdward Photography. 70 Volleyball players that is. And 10 as in 10 minutes! That's the challenge of tonights shoot. A league portrait with 70 players and 10 whole minutes of time to get the shot. Now I do have 20 minutes to setup for the shoot and 20 minutes after to clear out. But what do you do in 10 minutes? Indoors with lousy Middle School gym lighting no less. So here's the plan. There are no bleachers to use as risers so we'll have to resort to the tried and true by height method. 5 rows of 14 kids each. But 5 rows of subjects causes a real depth of field problem with available lighting. So strobes are in order. And then surely we'll see a decent amount of light fall off from the front row to the back. 1 stop for sure but probably closer to 2. So up we go. I'm going to bounce two strobes from either side of the camera position and extend the stands pretty high up. The strobes will be angled down towards the subjects. This will even out the distance of the strobes from the front to the back rows.
I'll be shooting from an elevated position so the players will be looking up slightly which will offer a more appealing and balanced light and really cut back if not eliminate shadow problems. I'll have a third strobe bounced from the center about three to four feet high that I'll use as fill. We'll see how this works out!
Here are the untouched proofs. Seem to be a little hot when I use a preset to get from raw to a small/web jpeg. But you get the idea. I guess I should rename this post to what do you do when you setup for 70 players and only half show up! No time to reset lights. Oh well... See the proofs here:

RAINY DAYS & MONDAYS
Riverside, CA. Photographer JeffreyEdward Photography. This is what happens when it rains for a week straight in LA. Cabin Fever! Well, I got bored and went for a walk. These images were taken at the University of California Riverside Botanical Gardens. I'd forgotten how much fun it was to walk around with a macro lense and shoot hand held. So much of my macro work over the last few years has been in the studio or on location with a tripod, a California Sunbounce and all sorts of reflectors. Sometimes I get so focused in on one way of producing a shot that, well, a few years go by.... Rainy Days & Mondays.
